Therapy for Depression
Are you feeling low energy? Do you wake up feeling like you have no passion or joy in life? Do you want to stay in bed all day? Do you regularly feel hopeless, isolated, and not your usual self?
If yes, you may be experiencing symptoms of depression. Unlike anxiety, depression is generally rooted in spending too much time concerned about the past: mistakes, regrets, second-guessing decisions, and feeling out of control. Depression is evidenced by low energy, or "freeze mode". It's where procrastination thrives.
Symptoms of depression include:
- Feeling tired or having little to no energy
- Feeling like you're a failure
- Feeling like you've let yourself or your family down
- Having insomnia or sleeping too much
- Difficulty with concentration and memory
- Feeling sad or hopeless
I want you to know that you are not alone, and therapy can help. Many of my clients find relief in realizing that their struggle does not have mastery over them; they can develop coping skills and solve their problems; and that working through their trauma feels like a new lease on life.
Depression is often rooted in unresolved trauma. Doing somatic therapies like ART or EMDR with bilateral stimulation, helps the brain to reprocess events and consolidate memories. Think of the brain like a room filled with filing cabinets. Each of the cabinets is filled with filing folders and papers. Each piece of paper represents a life experience. Trauma and stress come in like a whirlwind, opening all of the drawers and scattering the papers about, creating a mental mess, expressed as lack of clarity, confusion, and inability to focus. Therapy using bilateral stimulation, speaks safety to the brain, allowing it to reprocess the disturbing memories and put them back in order, filing them away in long-term memory. This frees up space in the mind for focus, clarity, understanding, the ability to problem-solve, and naturally, a decrease in symptoms of depression.
