The extent of my personal experience with psychedelics is quite shallow and limited to a handful of times with MDMA back in the day. Since that time, however, I have been very interested in the use and application of psychedelics as a healing modality. I’ve satiated my curiosity through the years by following the major studies being published. My interested was renewed recently, following the release of Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu (though admittedly, the show makes micro-dosing look dysfunctional in ways).
The use of plant medicine in the treatment of ailments is as old as time. Even the use of psychedelics to achieve an altered state of being-ness is something shaman have done for a variety of purposes including divination and healing for as long as they’ve been available.
I recently attended training in California where I learned about ketamine and how to sit with someone as well as integrate with someone who is doing a journey with medicine. My favorite quote from the training is, “We’ve gotta feel it to heal it”. Countless times I’ve sat with clients who avoid digging deep in therapy, EMDR, or reiki because they are terrified to feel. This puts the brain in “freeze” mode and leave people feeling anxious and depressed. Some think that by ignoring problems and overwhelming emotions, they will dissipate. And sometimes they do, however it’s only temporary. What we resist, persists and we can be sure that the pain will continue to surface until it’s digested, understood (to some degree), and integrated.
